Why Dance Isn’t Just for Kids: The Benefits of Dancing as an Adult

You spend so much of your time driving your kids to their activities, getting everyone where they need to be, and checking things off the family calendar. But when was the last time you did something just for YOU?

Dance isn't only for children and teenagers. In fact, adults can benefit from dancing in so many ways—from improving strength and coordination to reducing stress, building confidence, and simply having something fun to look forward to each week.

Whether you danced competitively growing up or have never taken a dance class in your life, it's never too late to dance.

Dance Is Exercise—But It Doesn't Feel Like Exercise

Let's be honest: finding motivation to work out can be difficult.

Going to the gym, getting on a treadmill, or repeating the same workout can start to feel like a chore. Dance offers a different approach.

You're moving, strengthening your muscles, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and challenging your coordination—all while learning choreography and listening to music.

Instead of watching the clock and wondering how much longer you have to exercise, you're focused on learning the next combination.

You get a workout without it feeling like a workout.

Dance Helps Keep Your Brain Active, Too

Dance isn't just physical. You're constantly asking your brain to remember choreography, recognize patterns, listen to music, coordinate your movements, and learn something new.

Learning choreography requires concentration and memory—and that mental challenge is part of what makes dance so rewarding.

It's Great for Strength, Balance, and Coordination

As adults, maintaining strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination becomes increasingly important.

Dance naturally incorporates all of these elements.

Depending on the style, dancers may work on:

  • Core strength

  • Leg and arm strength

  • Balance

  • Flexibility

  • Posture

  • Coordination

  • Agility

  • Cardiovascular endurance

And because you're taking every week, you can actually see your progress over time.

That feeling when a step that seemed impossible a few weeks ago suddenly clicks? That's one of the best parts of dance.

Dance Can Be a Great Stress Reliever

Sometimes you just need an hour where you're not thinking about work, dinner, laundry, errands, or everyone else's schedule.

Dance gives you permission to focus on something completely different.

For that hour, you aren't someone's parent, spouse, employee, boss, or caretaker.

You're just you—and you're a DANCER.

And Yes—You Can Start Again

For adults who danced growing up, returning to the studio can be especially rewarding.

Maybe you remember how much you loved dance but eventually moved on to college, a career, marriage, children, or simply life.

You may not have the exact same flexibility or stamina you had at 17—and that's okay!

Coming back to dance isn't about trying to become the dancer you were years ago. It's about discovering what you can do now.

And there is something pretty special about finding your way back to something you loved.

🕺 Adult Hip Hop

Mondays | 7:30–8:30 PM

Ready to have some fun?

Adult Hip Hop is a chance to learn choreography, move to great music, and let loose. You don't need to be a lifelong hip hop dancer—just come ready to learn and have a good time.

👞 Adult Tap

Tuesdays | 7:00–7:45 PM

There's something incredibly satisfying about making music with your feet.

Our adult tap class is a great choice for both adults who have tap experience and those who want to revisit the style they loved years ago. You'll work on steps, combinations, rhythm, and musicality while building coordination and having fun.

🩰 Adult Ballet

Tuesdays | 5:30-6:30pm OR 7:45-8:45pm

Ballet isn't just for little dancers in pink tights!

Adult ballet provides an opportunity to work on strength, flexibility, balance, posture, coordination, and technique—all while enjoying the artistry and musicality of ballet.

Whether you're returning to ballet or trying it for the first time, it's never too late to take your place at the barre.

Make Time for Yourself

It's easy for adults to put themselves at the bottom of the list.

There is always another errand, another responsibility, another person who needs something from you.

But making time for yourself isn't selfish.

Finding an activity that gets you moving, challenges your brain, gives you a chance to socialize, and—most importantly—makes you happy is worth making room for.

So if you've ever thought, "I used to dance," "I've always wanted to try dance," or "Maybe I'm too old to start," consider this your sign.

You're not too old.

You don't need to be a professional.

And you certainly don't need to wait until you have more time.

Come dance with us.

Mary Lorraine's Dance Center is proud to offer adult dance classes for dancers of all experience levels in Omaha.

Your kids don't have to be the only ones with a dance class on the calendar.
